Quilt Theory Release: Into the Forest

Today I’m excited to share my pattern for Quilt Theory’s collection for fall 2017, Into the Forest. This pattern speaks to my heart, and very much fits the vibe for my summer (it fits right in with my Summer Adventure quilt trees). For our third Quilt Theory collection, we challenged ourselves to create a color palette of 12 colors from which to pull, and all designed our quilts around the same color palette, using fabrics from a variety of manufacturers and designers. In this post you’ll not only get to see my newest pattern, Into the Forest, as well the bonus Glade Pillow pattern than accompanies my Into the Forest Quilt, but you will also have a chance to win a fat quarter bundle of Cloud 9 organic cirrus solids, so read on!

And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul. – Unknown

into the forest quilt theory pattern cloud9 organic fabrics aurifilTake a leisurely stroll with me into the depths of nature. Into the Forest plays with two sizes of the same block to create a simple graphic tree design with a crisp and clean aesthetic, like a morning stroll through a cool forest. Inspired by the majestic evergreen trees ubiquitous in Maine, this quilt uses your 5 favorite fat quarters to make a nature inspired lap quilt finishing at 52″ x 60″. Use organic, repurposed, or naturally dyed fabrics to really become one with nature.

into the forest quilt theory pattern cloud9 organic fabrics aurifilIt seemed only natural to choose Cloud 9 organic fabrics for my Into the Forest quilt, since Cloud 9 fabrics uses only 100% certified organic cotton in the manufacturing of their base cloths and eco-responsible low impact dyes for printing and dying. They work closely with mills that are committed to ethical and responsible conduct. This includes respecting the rights of all individuals, a devotion to sustained social compliance, and an accountability to the environment (from the Cloud 9 website). These practices are more important than ever, and Into the Forest seemed a perfect vehicle for this reminder.

into the forest quilt theory pattern cloud9 organic fabrics aurifilMy Into the Forest quilt was partially pieced and quilted by me, and partially pieced and quilted by Sue Bishop. I’m super grateful for Sue’s willingness to step in and make progress on the quilt while I was traveling in the middle of the summer, and her work is impeccable. The quilt was quilted using straight line quilting on both a long arm and my domestic Bernina, and was both pieced and quilted using Aurifil 50wt 2024-White.

Glade Pillow pattern Into the Forest Quilt Theory bonus patternIn the spirit of conservation, I also created a free bonus pillow pattern that uses up most of the scraps created through the construction of Into the Forest. The link to the bonus pillow pattern is included on the pdf purchase page here, but note that you need both the pillow pattern and the original quilt pattern to create the pillow. I had a lot of fun quilting the Glade Pillow and used an assortment of Aurifil threads: 40wt: 5005-Medium turquoise, 2785-Very dark navy and 50wt: 2579-Medium orchid, 2800-Mint ice, 2021-Natural white, and of course 2600-Dove. I’ll be sharing a closer look at the Glade Pillow soon, so stay tuned!

I also love seeing how different the forests on the west coast look compared to the forests on the east coast. Michelle took some absolutely magical photos of Into the Forest, too.

  1. Love your quilt! I combine errands as much as possible so I only have to go out once. I also regularly donate to my local food pantry.

  2. Love this quilt – the colors & the name! So clever! My biggest way to conserve energy is too keep my thermostat on 74 degrees in the summer & wear lighter weight clothing. In winter I set it to 68 degrees & put on a sweater! Thank you, Susan

  3. Hi Kitty,
Oh, I love those outtake photos! What a cute little guy – whatcha doing and why is this quilt in my way? Oh, you’re taking a picture – smile. Love it. Your quilt is beautiful – fabulous fabrics and quilting. How interesting about the different forests on the east/west coast! I try to be earth-friendly every day. I recycle/reuse everything possible, collect rainwater in a rain barrel, drive a hybrid, and many other things. I follow you here on Word Press. ~smile~ Roseanne

  5. Thank you for sharing your beautiful quilt with us! We recycle and compost as much as possible. Our city picks up recycling weekly with the trash which makes it easy for everyone.

  6. Your quilt really stands out & the pics are awesome. I use small plates, recycle regularly and am switching to desert landscaping to save on water.

  7. My kiddos have recently learned about “reduce, reuse, recycle”. While I was pretty good at reducing and recycling, they’ve reminded me to reuse things more. Thanks kids!

  8. This is a great quilt, Kitty! Those beautiful forests in your area will always be a fond memory for me. Environmentally, we recycle, we compost. We try to eat at home much of the time, and buy as few packaged foods as we can. I make my own shopping bags. Our daughter is teaching me to thrift 🙂 We are teaching ourselves to split meals at restaurants.

  9. I keep a recycling bin under my kitchen sink so it’s easy for everyone to separate out the recyclables. I’m also getting into upcycling worn out clothing. I love what I’ve made so far.

  10. Your quilt design is on point for the visual effect it gives of a forest! Bravo! I recycle everything possible and even bring home items to recycle at home if recycling isn’t available where I am. I also do many errands on one trip and also carpool many other Quilters to events. Thanks for the chance to win the lovely giveaway!

  11. Love the quilt and your choice of bacground for the photos…the pillow is so fresh and scrappy. I pack my husband’s lunch in reusable containers rather than plastic bags, buy less ‘stuff’ that eventually ends up in the landfill and monitor the heat and airconditioning. sjvonfumetti at yahoo dot com

  12. Your quilt design is lovely! and your son makes a wonderful model! We really try to limit our waste – we recycle all our plastics, aluminium, cans cardboard and as much paper as possible. We compost all our kitchen waste (really helps the soil in our yard). We buy drinks in recyclable glass deposit bottles (some weeks I make lots of money taking them all back!!). i am proud to say we are down to one 15 gal trash bag in our bin each week!!! We drive a hybird car and donated the second gas guzzler! Both my boys ride bikes – the older one has been riding to work for years….(does complain when it rains but he isn’t made of sugar….)

  13. I really love this quilt. Yes, the west coast forests have suffered because of the drought, beetles and general lack of care by the guardians of the forests.

On a daily basis, we compost as much as we can, recycle all that we can and end up with one kitchen bag of garbage a week. Of course, it is only me and my husband.

Oh, I hardly ever throw away fabric scraps!!! Just can’t let go of them.

  14. The biggest thing my family does on a daily basis is to always have reusable water bottles on hand. Plastic water bottles make me cringe! My husband and I take them to work each day (and I bring my own coffee in a travel mug, which saves on trash AND money!) and we make sure to fill a few up when we go out with the kids on the weekend. I am a water guzzler so I can’t imagine how much waste I alone would make by consuming water via plastic water bottles.

  15. The forest settings, complete with family, are wonderful. As I am in New Zealand, not an entry comment, but we recycle EVERYTHING, having a local plant, to leave glass, plastic, tins and paper/cardboard. As well we use wood in a chip heater to heat all our hot water, or solar panels. The colours you chose are so crisp, and against the green trees, truly lovely.

  17. I help the earth by not wasting food. I will make several meals out of something that was left over from a evening dinner. Such as turning leftover pot roast into, shredded beef tacos, Philly cheese steak pizza etc.. I really have fun with this.

  18. Love your quilt! I was not surprised at the theme of your quilt since I’ve been following you all summer… It does go right with your “Summer Adventure Quilt”!
I freeze in the winter (thermostat set at 68) unless curled up in one of my quilts and suffer the heat in the summer (thermostat set at 78 – sometimes higher – admittedly when my hubby has adjusted it!) to conserve energy. We also have Energy Star appliances.
