Feather on a Summer’s Night {& a Giveaway}

I’ve wanted to make the feathers from Shape Moth’s Forest Quilt Along since I first began paper piecing. After recently selecting a fabric bundle for Fiddlehead Artisan Supply, I was trying to decide what project to make with the bundle. I asked my friend Stephanie and she immediately replied, “Feathers!”. Done deal.

summer nights fabric bundle fiddleheadIt’s no secret that I love high contrast and bright colors. Dark midnight blues paired with bright oranges and yellow compose this month’s blogger bundle for Fiddlehead Artisan Supply. It’s called “Summer Nights“, reminiscent of fireflies and popsicles. Scroll down to enter for a chance to win a Summer Nights bundle for yourself.

summer nights fabric bundle fiddleheadThere’s just something about this bundle that was begging to be stitched into feathers, or maybe fireflies. I might have to work on a firefly pattern, now that we mention it. Inspiration is everywhere!

shape moth featherI love how bright and bold the yellow and orange look against the dark blue. The fact that the fabrics include some of my favorites (Doe, Prisma Elements, Plume, and a fun new find by Lecien) surely adds to the appeal.

foundation paper pieced back detailI used wash-away stabilizer sheets provided to me by Alyssa at Pile O’Fabric, and I’m both excited and nervous to soak this block in water so that the sheets dissolve. Imagine that–foundation paper piecing without having to remove the paper at the end! I’ll be sure to write a post about how it all goes once I build up the bravery to let the feather take the plunge.

I’m not quite sure what I will create out of this bright feather block; I think for sure I will make its little buddy (the second feather in the pattern) before fully finishing. I’m on the fence about whether to make it into a pillow or a mini wall hanging. I’m leaning toward a pillow, with the Plume fabric as the back. What would you make?

The goal was to complete the quilt and pattern that will be published in the September issue of Make Modern Magazine. Rather than post a boring, photoless post to document that I’ve met my goal, I’ll use this post as a multi-finish! I’m linking up with Crazy Mom Quilts Finish it up Friday, and ALYoF as my July Finish post.

  1. I’m going to leave 3 comments in a row because I love this fabric… the little scissors are so cute! So first… hearing the words “Summer Nights” immediately makes me think of the song from Grease!

  5. Pick me pick me pick me!!! I love blue and orange/yellow, and these are just perfect together.

Summer nights – I’d say crickets but we don’t have crickets here, so maybe distant beach parties instead. Or the shouts from skinny dipping.

    And nice feather too btw.

  6. I immediately think of campfires and smores when I hear ‘summer nights’! I spent many a night camping with my family when I was younger. 🙂

  7. First thing first, summer nights, I think about watching a sunset sitting on a sun warmed rock slab which slopes down to an evening becalmed lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area which what I will be doing next week!

I so love receiving your emails.in the midst of all my work emails.

I soooo love your choice of fabrics for this feather.

I am new to paper piecing.the sewing line on some of the smallest pieces is pretty small.any suggestions..?

Also.I would make a wall hanging with your two feathers.in my house all pillows are waded up under a head.winkl!

I will make this feather try to at least and put it on my desk in my office.

Back to you from sunny and very hot Seattle

  9. Summer nights? Oh the joy of being a little kid at night in the country!
Cooled down from the summer day’s heat. Chasing the lightening bugs to put in a jar! Porch sitting! Gazing up at the stars. These are all the things I think of when I hear Summer nights

  11. It always, without fail, makes me think of the song from Grease. Not very original i know. I can’t believe you’re using wash away paper, that takes all the fun out of paper piecing, tearing off the paper is the best bit!

  12. I love the feather! It’s so bright against that blue background, and would look lovely as a pillow (or a wall-hanging, so really, you can’t go wrong) 🙂 Summer nights for me mean campfires, sometimes in the backyard, but the best ones are when we’re actually out camping and sleeping in the tent after the fire is done. Thanks for the chance to win!

  13. Just LOVE the feather and the fabric is stunning. I’ve always had a thing for blue and orange. What comes to mind with summer nights : Campfires, dancing (used to go to a lot of music festivals, it’s how my hubby and I met), long walks, bats flying around our heads while we lounge in the pool… I could go on!

  14. Summer nights remind me of staying out with my friends until the street lights came on. I know that kinda dates me, but that was our “social network” when I was growing up. Thanks for the opportunity.

  15. I follow via email. Summer Nights – you asked what I would make but I was already thinking of what you could make. What came to mind was something with photos of your kids as they are today. Feathers are strong yet need to be released. They bend and float and are irrestible. Not many people can be walking along, see a feather, and not stoop to pick it up, then stroke it, imagine the bird of origin, and then sometimes send it off into the air to be found by someone else. If you do make something with photos, make a small block with Summer 2015 and where you/your family were that summer. If you make a table runner/center, you can pull it out to use in January and think of summer, what you did, etc. Thanks so much for your blog posts. How you make the time is beyond my comprehension but I am grateful you do.

  16. Summer Nights – I think of warm evenings, being outdoors, looking at the stars in the sky, watching the June bugs flit through the air, whispers of conversation, wanting the evening to last forever yet feeling tired and knowing I need to retire to bed so I can greet the morning and repeat. Thanks for the optin to win a bundle of fabric.

  17. Summer nights are long and unbearable. 😀 I’m a bit of a summer grump. I’m not sure what I’d make with the feathers – they’ve been on my list for ages too. Maybe the side panel for a bag? Like a nice little zippy bag to hold EPP supplies.
